Bacteriology Program
This program is designed for laboratories performing extensive testing. It contains all of the following modules:
Urine - includes microscopy, bacterial count, pathogen ID and antibiotic susceptibilities.
Skin/Throat Pathogens - includes simulated clinical specimens for pathogen isolation, bacterial identification, Gram stain and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Faecal Pathogens - includes culture of simulated clinical specimens for the isolation of pathogens, evaluation of selective media and bacterial identification.
Respiratory Pathogens - includes culture of simulated clinical specimens for the isolation of pathogens, evaluation of selective media, bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Genital Swabs/Anaerobes - includes culture of simulated clinical specimens for the isolation of pathogens, evaluation of selective media and bacterial identification.
Mycobacteriology - includes prepared slides for acid-fast staining and simulated sputa for AFB culture.
Difficult/Blood Culture Isolates – for identification. Not suited to laboratories undertaking a limited range of identification procedures.
N.B. Laboratories enrolled in the Bacteriology Program are not required to enrol in the Urine Dipstick Chemistry.
STAT Microscopy is not available to those subscribers.
Frequency Eight shipments will be sent at six-week intervals.
Specimen Information Each shipment
includes six or seven lyophilised samples containing either a pure culture or a mixture simulating clinical specimen with pathogen/s and normal body flora.

Bacteriology Modules
Laboratories which do not undertake all the testing available in the Bacteriology Program may choose any of the individual Bacteriology
Modules which are available. The content of these modules is the same as listed in the Bacteriology Program.
Enrolment in any of the following modules requires payment of the Basic Fee which covers the cost of packaging and transport
Subscribers to any of the individual Bacteriology Modules may also need to enrol in Dipstick Chemistry. Enrolment in STAT Microscopy is
not required.
Frequency Four shipments at 12 week intervals with the exception of the Difficult/Blood Culture module, for
which there are 8 six weekly shipments of a single specimen
Specimen Information Most module
shipments consist of two specimens containing either a pure culture or a mixture simulating a clinical specimen with normal body flora. The Difficult/Blood Culture module shipment consists of a single
specimen.

Sub-Programs
The program covers a wide variety of
fungi and yeasts encountered in clinical laboratories. Included are dermatophytes, systemic mycotic pathogens, clinically significant yeasts and contaminants of interest.
Frequency Four shipments at twelve-week intervals.
Specimen Information Each shipment contains three lyophilised samples of pure culture for identification.
Specimens cover a wide range of parasites, endemic and non-endemic
in Australia. From time to time educational preparations will be included - these specimens will not attract a score.
Frequency Four shipments at twelve-week intervals.
Specimen Information Each shipment
will contain two specimens. These may be fixed smears for staining or faecal suspensions.

Analytes
blood
glucose
protein
nitrite
Frequency Four shipments at twelve-week intervals.
Specimen Information Each shipment will contain two lyophilised specimens.
This program includes CSF cell counts, urine cell counts and Gram stains of various specimens such as CSF, body fluids,
wound swabs and sputum. This program will cover those laboratories which perform only critical/emergency microscopy before referring the specimen to the parent laboratory for culture. The
program provides 4 shipments of 4 specimens at twelve weekly intervals.
This program is essentially for laboratories performing limited testing and is not available to laboratories enrolling
in the Bacteriology Program.

These specimens are suitable for nucleic acid amplification and are in the form of simulated clinical specimens.
N.B.
These specimens are not suitable for Chlamydia immunofluorescence antiserum tests or ELISA tests. Please refer to Serology QAP for these programs.
Specimen Information Two shipments will be sent, each containing six lyophilised specimens.

To be tested for:
- B.pertussis
- Cytomegalovirus
- Enterovirus
- Herpes simplex
- M.avium complex
- MRSA (mec gene)
- M.tuberculosis
- Varicella virus
These specimens are suitable for nucleic acid amplification and are in the form of simulated clinical specimens.
Specimen Information For each organism two shipments will be sent, each containing 4-6 Lyophilised specimens.
